    Dr. Mark Swerdlik, professor of psychology at Illinois State University and licensed clinical psychologist.

    This podcast reviews the impact of deployment on military families and the challenges faced with returning soldiers integrating back into their families and society. Emphasis focuses on the impact on children and how to help children manage their confusing/stress/emotions. Dr. Cooper provides keen insight as a retired officer describing the soldier's perspective of the reintegration as well as a medical perspective with the reactions she has observed from her patients. Dr. Pisano has worked with military families for 27 years at the time of the recording and shares observations from working the children in the schools and their families. Dr. Swerdlik was instrumental in the development of the Illinois Guard and Reserve reintegration program designed to make the reintegration process as smooth as possible for those returning soldiers.

    This podcast explains the various stages of the deployment cycle and the impact on the military family. Each phase of the deployment cycle is discussed in detail with suggestions on what families can do to help manage their fears/stress. Emphasis is placed on the military child and what the child typically experiences (emotionally) throughout the deployment stages. Dr. Cooper provides keen insight as a retired officer describing the soldier's perspective of the reintegration as well as a medical perspective with the reactions she has observed from her patients. Dr. Pisano has worked with military families for 27 years at the time of the recording and shares observations from working the children in the schools and their families. Dr. Swerdlik has worked with military families through the Guard and Reserve branches and provides his observations and suggestions.
